WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • 1. Spreading rounded shrub growing 1–4 m high and wide 
    2. Branchlets yellow or reddish, minutely hairy 
    3. ‘Leaves’ grey-green, 1.5–5 cm long, 3–7 mm wide, radiating around branchlets, variable in shape 
    4. Bright golden ball flowers in heavy clusters at branch ends; flower stalks stout, with minute golden hairs; flowering April to October 
    5. Seed pods straight or curved, 5–10 cm long, 4–9 mm wide, dark brown at maturity, may have a whitish bloom 
    A tall shrub or small tree that may reach a height of 6 to 7m. It has a wide shape. 
  • The phyllodes are flat, up to 18 centimetres long, three centimetres wide with several longitudinal veins and a small gland near the base.
  • Bright flowers are carried in spikes with a pair of spikes at the base of each phyllode. 
  • In late winter and spring the blooms are both conspicuous and profuse. 
  • Straight or curved pods follow the flowers and hold many seeds.

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • Grows best in full sun. 
  • Tolerates shade, but its foliage will be less dense. 
  • Tolerates salt, wind and some frost.    
  • Prefers well drained soils and performs well on sandy soils. 
  • Can tolerate some periods of drought. 

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • Useful as a windbreak or screen. 
  • Provides habitat for birds and insects.
  • May exhibit suckering from basal parts and roots.
