DAGGER WATTLE

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • An upright shrub reaching a height of 2 m. 
  • Phyllodes are dagger-shaped and come equipped with a sharp point. They are about 30 millimetres long by 2 millimetres wide, rigid with a small gland near the centre of phyllode. 
  • Globular flower heads produced singularly in the axil of each phyllode, with up to 7 mm diametre and up to 45 flowers per head. 
  • Flowerse mid-yellow and appear in spring and early summer.

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • A. ligulata is found on sand dunes, on the fringes of salt lakes, on floodplains, in mulga and bluebush communities, in woodlands, in mallee communities.
    It is found in the hottest and driest climates of Australia with rainfall of less than 200mm and survives light frost. 
    This is one of the few wattles that could be cultivated in both moist and dry situations.  
  • The Dagger Wattle has a wide distribution. In NSW the species is found on the northern and southern tablelands. 
  • It may be suitable for rocky sloping gardens.  
  • It tends to grow in granite soils naturally so may need this condition to thrive. 
  • It is reported to be hardy once established. 

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

 

  • A handsome if somewhat prickly shrub and perhaps should not be planted beside paths.
