Medium to tall tree suitable for areas with poor drainage. Good fuel wood. Most soils. Tolerates drought, lime and salt soil. Usually frost resistant.

 

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • 1. Spreading rounded shrub growing 1–4 m high and wide 
    2. Branchlets yellow or reddish, minutely hairy 
    3. ‘Leaves’ grey-green, 1.5–5 cm long, 3–7 mm wide, radiating around branchlets, variable in shape 
    4. Bright golden ball flowers in heavy clusters at branch ends; flower stalks stout, with minute golden hairs; flowering April to October 
    5. Seed pods straight or curved, 5–10 cm long, 4–9 mm wide, dark brown at maturity, may have a whitish bloom 
    Typically a medium-sized tree 9 – 15 m tall. 
  • The branchlets up to about 50 cm in length, the articles mostly 8 – 10 mm long, with 10 – 14 leaf-teeth, up to 1 mm in diameter. 
  • The fruits are barrel-shaped, about 1 – 1.5 cm wide by 1.5 – 2 cm long, on peduncles 5 - 10 mm long, and with the bottom of the fruit, where it is attached to the peduncle, flat.

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • Grows on a wide range of soils, but mainly on sandy loams, and usually on lower parts of the terrain. 
  • Will thrive in well drained soil with little attention once established. 
  • Tolerate mild salt levels however it is best planted in low frost zones. 
  • Can tolerates drought. 

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • Early growth is relatively fast, but this is generally considered a slow-growing species.
  • Suitable for both screen or hedge. 
  • Is a nitrogen fixing tree. 
  • Excellent tree for firewood and good properties for a windbreak. 
  • Seeds have been found to be a food source for the Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo.
