WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • 1. Spreading rounded shrub growing 1–4 m high and wide 
    2. Branchlets yellow or reddish, minutely hairy 
    3. ‘Leaves’ grey-green, 1.5–5 cm long, 3–7 mm wide, radiating around branchlets, variable in shape 
    4. Bright golden ball flowers in heavy clusters at branch ends; flower stalks stout, with minute golden hairs; flowering April to October 
    5. Seed pods straight or curved, 5–10 cm long, 4–9 mm wide, dark brown at maturity, may have a whitish bloom 
    An attractive, fast growing, bushy shrub growing from 4 - 7 m high. 
  • The foliage is fine, heather-like, hence its common name. 
  • It's variability in size and flower colour has led to it being the parent plant of many popular banksia cultivars.
  • Its large striking spikes of yellow to reddish-orange flowers contrasted with small, linear, light-green to greyish-green leaves. 
  • The cylindrical flower spikes are quite large at 4-6 cm wide and up to 30 cm long. 
  • Flowers open from the top of the spike down. Flowering occurs over an extended period beginning in autumn and continuing through to early spring. 

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • Plant in a well draining, neutral to slightly acid pH, sandy to sandy loam soil. 
  • Grows in the wild in woodland and sometimes partly swampy areas. 
  • Tolerates cold, dryness, lime and salt spray. 

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • Forms an excellent screen plant or windbreak in gardens.
  • Birds adore these plants and kept busy for ages.  
  • One of the best plants for attracting honey-eating birds.
