WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • 1. Spreading rounded shrub growing 1–4 m high and wide 
    2. Branchlets yellow or reddish, minutely hairy 
    3. ‘Leaves’ grey-green, 1.5–5 cm long, 3–7 mm wide, radiating around branchlets, variable in shape 
    4. Bright golden ball flowers in heavy clusters at branch ends; flower stalks stout, with minute golden hairs; flowering April to October 
    5. Seed pods straight or curved, 5–10 cm long, 4–9 mm wide, dark brown at maturity, may have a whitish bloom 
    Large shrub with dense foliage massed with crimson flowers and generally described as bright red, tipped with dark anthers with an average height of 3m. 
  • Leaves are flat and stiff and growth is also stiff and dense.
  • The woody seed capsules remain closed on the branches for years and open when taken off and placed in a warm place.
  • Flowering can ocur twice a year if well watered with the main flowering season from early November. Autumn flowers can apprear from the end of March. 

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • Most soil type or situation. 
  • Tolerates wetness, dryness, lime & salt soils.

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • Can be used for a large hedge trimmed hard, or trained for a small tree by keeping one stem and staking in early years. 
  • Excellent for the bees and small birds.
