WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • 1. Spreading rounded shrub growing 1–4 m high and wide 
    2. Branchlets yellow or reddish, minutely hairy 
    3. ‘Leaves’ grey-green, 1.5–5 cm long, 3–7 mm wide, radiating around branchlets, variable in shape 
    4. Bright golden ball flowers in heavy clusters at branch ends; flower stalks stout, with minute golden hairs; flowering April to October 
    5. Seed pods straight or curved, 5–10 cm long, 4–9 mm wide, dark brown at maturity, may have a whitish bloom 
    A hardy large shrub woth dense foliage reaching 5-6 m. 
  • Attractive white papery bark. 
  • The leaves are narrow-elliptical, soft texture, pale green with numerous oil dots. Juvenile foliage is bright pink.
  • The brushes are creamy-white to yellow, 5 cm long by 3 cm wide and appear in spring. Brushes are usually abundant and conspicuous. Sometimes there are sporadic blooms in autumn. 

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • Suitable to moist soils.
  • Likely to do best in full sun. 
  • Frost tender when young.

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • Honeyeaters are attracted to the nectar-rich brushes. 
  • Can regenerate from seed after fire. 
  • Can also reshoot from basal coppicing, and epicormic shoots.
