WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • 1. Erect or spreading shrub growing 1–3 m high
    2. Branchlets smooth, often reddish
    3. ‘Leaves’ grey-green, elliptical to obliquely rounded, 1–4 cm long, 3–11 mm wide
    4. Golden yellow globular flowerheads on fine hairless stalks in loose racemes, often profuse; flowering July to November
    5. Seed pods straight or curved, 5–9 cm long, 5–8 mm wide, pale brown at maturity, sometimes with a whitish bloom
Typically a medium shrub - 5-6m high - with pendulous foliage although some forms are more pendulous than others.
  • Brushes are usually about 70 mm long by 50 mm diameter, bright red in colour and are usually seen in spring and sometimes in autumn.
  • The seed capsules that follow the flowers release the seed annually.

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • Usually found along watercourses and performs best if a reliable water supply is available.
  • Able to tolerate extended dry periods and can be frost tender when young.
  • Performs best in medium to heavy soils and can tolerate less than perfect drainage.
  • Flowers best in a sunny location but they will tolerate considerable shade at the expense of flowering performance.

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • May be damaged by moderate to heavy frost.
  • Attractive to birds and insects.
  • An attractive and reliable small tree for street planting.
