WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • Shrub or tree growing 2–15 m or more, with an erect main stem, hairy branchlets and silvery grey-green foliage.
  • Bark smooth and light coloured on young growth, becoming thicker, dark and moderately fissured on older trees.
  • Leaves feather-like, with a distinct nectar secreting gland where each paired set of leaflets joins the main leaf stalk; leaflets 2–5 mm long, 0.4–0.7 mm wide.
  • Bright yellow ball flowers, July to November.
  • Seed pods straight, 5–8 cm long, 8–12 mm wide, light purplish brown.

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • Grows on a variety of soil types, including granite and sandstone, and on clays if adequately drained.
  • Occurs as a spindly shrub on drier sites, or as a tall tree in cooler, wetter forests.
  • Often found along stream banks.

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • Fast-growing; useful for stream bank stabilisation, gully erosion control and for medium-level cover in windbreaks.
  • Coppices after cutting or burning; suckers readily; improves soil fertility by ’fixing‘ nitrogen; palatable to stock.
  • Excellent wildlife habitat, attracting seed and insect-eating birds; gum is favoured food of sugar and squirrel gliders.
  • Timber is light brown to pinkish, used for sawn timber, pulp, posts/poles and firewood.

SIMILAR PLANTS:

  • Acacia Leucoclada - Northern Silver Wattle - is usually found on drier sites, and has extra glands along the leaf stalk.
