BUFFALO WATTLE

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • 1. Usually a small tree from 3 to 10 metres high. 
    2. Retains the fern-like, bipinnate foliage throughout their lives (in most other species, the bipinnate foliage is replaced by flattened stems called phyllodes). 
    3. 'Leaves' are up to 30 mm long and silvery-grey in colour. 
    4. The plant has smooth, greyish brown bark. 
    5. The bright yellow flower clusters are globular in shape and are produced in the leaf axils in late winter to spring.
    Erect or spreading shrub or small tree, 2-9 m high. 
  • Flattened or angled branchlets.
  • Flowering Golden-yellow Sep-Dec.

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • Chiefly south of Tumut, and east of Hume Highway. Noted in the areas: Paddy's River-Burra Valley; Tooma and Gilmore 'upper reaches'.
  • Dry sclerophyll forest on granite hillsides and in gullies, 700-1000 m elevation.
  • Prefers moist, well-drained soils; full sun.

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • Excellent low-level cover in windbreaks. 
  • Useful shade - should be useful for cool-area gardens. 
  • Improves soil fertility through 'fixing' nitrogen.
  • Attractive with good foliage.
  • Regenerates by root suckering, from soil-stored seed after disturbance, such as fire, ripping and ploughing, and from cut stumps. 

SIMILAR PLANTS:

  • Acacia Decora - Western Golden Wattle - has golden pubescent peduncles (hairy flower stalks).
