SPURR-WINGED WATTLE

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • A graceful shrub growing to 1-3 m high and 1-5 m wide, it has stiff bluish-grey phyllodes that are quite ornamental.
  • A hardy species, putting on an impressive display of soft, golden yellow flowers in the spring. 

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • A. ligulata is found on sand dunes, on the fringes of salt lakes, on floodplains, in mulga and bluebush communities, in woodlands, in mallee communities.
    It is found in the hottest and driest climates of Australia with rainfall of less than 200mm and survives light frost. 
    It must be watered until it is established, but thereafter it is fairly hardy to dry and wet periods. It can have an upright habit, or grow low and spreading. Needs very well drained soil.
  • Frost hardy (will tolerate frosts to -7 C )

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • Suitable for hedge, screening and/or windbreaks. 
  • Showy species for cut flowers and erosion control. 
  • Suitable for areas of low maintenence (eg. road batters).
