MOUNTAIN SWAMP GUM

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • Tree or mallee to 20m high, with smooth bark shedding in ribbons.
  • Rounded green adult leaves.
  • Flowering White in March to April. 

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • Widespread, in most catchments and districts on the drier hills and slopes.
    Grassy woodlands on various soils. Commonly moderately fertile soils.
    Compact loams, below 800m elevation. 
    Tolerates frost, winter waterlogging and drought.
    Primarily in wetter sites and upper reaches of catchments and districts east of Hume Highway. 
  • Open swampy flats and creeklines.
  • Moist to wet soils. Tolerates very cold conditions and heavy soils.

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • Useful medium-level cover in windbreaks.
  • Useful for controlling gully erosion, behind more fibrous-rooted understorey plants. Useful for improving drainage in boggy areas.
  • Excellent habitat. Hollows are nesting sites for many birds, including the Sooty Owl, and mammals including the Mountain Brushtail Possum. Flowers a food source for many insects. Insect-eating birds attracted.
  • Very vigorous and attractive for parks and gardens.
