WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • A shrub or small tree to about 4.5 metres high with smooth, grey bark.
  • 2. Retains the fern-like, bipinnate foliage throughout their lives (in most other species, the bipinnate foliage is replaced by flattened stems called phyllodes).
    3. 'Leaves' are up to 30 mm long and silvery-grey in colour.
    4. The plant has smooth, greyish brown bark.
    5. The bright yellow flower clusters are globular in shape and are produced in the leaf axils in late winter to spring.
The mature plant does not have true 'leaves' but has leaf-like flattened stems called phyllodes.
  • The phyllodes are linear in shape from 30-60 mm long by about 2 mm wide and greyish-green in colour.
  • The bright yellow flower clusters are globular in shape and are produced in the leaf axils in late winter to spring.

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • Hardy plant suitable for a wide range of climates and soils, provided they are reasonably well drained, athough it is probably at its best in less humid areas.
  • It prefers full sun or partial shade.

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE

  • The dense soft foliage makes a good screen and the brilliant yellow flowers offer seasonal colour.
  • Relativity short-lived with an expected life of about 15 years.
  • Once fully grown it takes up a lot of room so is not suitable for small or medium sized gardens.
