WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • Stately, tall growth (up to 30m) habit and distinctive trunk which is blotched with patches of old bark contrasting with the smooth, cream bark beneath.
  • Leaves are the typical lance shape shared by many eucalypts and are 10-20 cm long by 2.5 cm wide.
  • The white flowers occur in winter to spring but are not as conspicuous as they are with a number of other corymbias.
  • The flowers are followed by brown, barrel shaped fruits about 15 mm in diameter.

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • On larger properties or in parklands it is a superb feature, particularly if close planted.
  • It is suited to temperate to tropical areas but will grow satisfactorily in drier climates if water is available.
  • It adapts to a wide range of soils provided they are not waterlogged.

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • An important forest tree providing timber for heavy construction, pit props, housing, flooring, bent work, tool handles, preservative-treated poles, plywood and pulp.
  • Important for winter honey production and maintenance of healthy beehives.
  • Widely grown as an ornamental in parks and gardens and attract honey eating birds.
  • Fire resistant.
  • The bark sheds in early summer and it can result in an untidy appearance on lawns and paths for a few weeks.

SIMILAR SPEICES:

  • Corymbia Henryi - Large-leaved Spotted Gum - is very similar in appearance to Corymbia Maculata and occurs in part of the same range.
