WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • Fast growing tree to 20m high, with shortly fibrous bark shedding in ribbons above. 
  • Glossy green adult leaves.
  • Leaves produce yellow dye with alum as mordant.
  • Flowering white-cream and mainly November to December.

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • Widespread, in most catchments and districts on the drier hills and slopes.
    Grassy woodlands on various soils. Commonly moderately fertile soils.
    Compact loams, below 800m elevation. 
    Tolerates frost, winter waterlogging and drought.
    Dry sclerophyll woodland on poor shallow stony soils, on rises.
  • Well-drained, relatively poor soils on gentle slopes and ridges. 
  • Tolerates moderate frost, extended dry periods and wind.
  • Widespread in higher rainfall catchments predominantly east of the Hume Highway.

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • Useful medium-level cover in windbreaks. Useful shade due to large crown and low branches. 
  • Regeneration from seed and during wet summers. 
  • Moderately hard and strong timber, but not durable. 
  • Flowers are a food source for nectar-feeding birds, mammals and insects. Insect-eating birds attracted. Seeds and fruits food for native birds. Hollows are nesting and refuge sites for a range of birds and mammals.
  • Attractive specimen for gardens.

SIMILAR SPECIES: 

  • Sometimes similar to the Eucalyptus Macrorhyncha - Red Stringybark - but distinguished by its smaller fruit and distinct juvenile foliage.
