WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • Mallee or tree to 15m high with dull-green leaves and smooth bark shedding in plates or flakes.
  • Flowering creamy white from winter to spring. Flowers regularly.
  • Red timber, reasonably hard.

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • Widespread, in most catchments and districts on the drier hills and slopes.
    Grassy woodlands on various soils. Commonly moderately fertile soils.
    Compact loams, below 800m elevation. 
    Tolerates frost, winter waterlogging and drought.
    Found on dry, rocky hills mainly west of the Hume Highway. 
  • Sclerophyll mallee shrubland. 
  • Well-drained shallow soils on siliceous ridges.

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • Useful low to medium-level cover in windbreaks in hill country.
  • Useful in recharge revegetation.
  • Good supplies of nectar and pollen used by various native insects and birds.
  • Attractive ornamental for gardens.
  • Significant tree in apiculture.
