WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

  • 1. Spreading rounded shrub growing 1–4 m high and wide
    2. Branchlets yellow or reddish, minutely hairy
    3. ‘Leaves’ grey-green, 1.5–5 cm long, 3–7 mm wide, radiating around branchlets, variable in shape
    4. Bright golden ball flowers in heavy clusters at branch ends; flower stalks stout, with minute golden hairs; flowering April to October
    5. Seed pods straight or curved, 5–10 cm long, 4–9 mm wide, dark brown at maturity, may have a whitish bloom
Small tree usually reaching around 10 m.
  • Leaves are up to 15 centimetres long, dark green and glossy above, pale green beneath with prominent venation.
  • Flowers are held in terminal clusters, three centimetres across, tubular with five lobes. Initially blooms are pale cream, ageing to orange-yellow sometimes with reddish tones. They are highly perfumed and are carried, in large numbers, in the warmer months.

WHERE IT GROWS & WHY:

  • Tolerate a wide range of soils – although enriched and well-drained is best.
  • Should be pruned after every flowering to create a much denser foliage.
  • Very hardy generally.

MANAGEMENT/SIGNIFICANCE:

  • A highly desired plant due to the scent of the flowers – which smell most strongly at night.
  • This species is not highly prone to fires but can likely regenerate from suckering and from the seed bank.
